Event on Darfur Sponsored by WHYY

This is definitely worth checking out - might be a good springboard to your news story, or your final paper.

Darfur: A Humanitarian Crisis

Town Hall at WHYY with America Abroad

Join WHYY and America Abroad Media with host Ray Suarez on April 10, 2006 at 6:00 pm for a live town hall discussion on the crisis in Darfur. This panel discussion is open to the public and will be taped for later broadcast on WHYY 91FM.

In the Darfur region of Sudan, more than 200,000 people have died and more than 2 million have lost their homes in what the United States has called the first genocide of the 21st century. Yet, for more than two years the international response has been inadequate to stop the mass killing and ethnic cleansing. The absence of a forceful international response has been brought to the forefront again as attention has refocused on Darfur in recent weeks, with news that the crisis has intensified and begun to spread into neighboring Chad. According to media reports, both the Bush administration and the United Nations are considering more serious, and dramatic, action to help the people of Darfur and Chad.

On Monday April 10th, join America Abroad and WHYY in Philadelphia for a special town hall event, "Darfur: A Humanitarian Crisis," that will examine the prospects for international intervention in Darfur, the moral argument in favor of intervention, and the practical challenges facing those troops and countries that might intervene. What role should the United States play in addressing the crisis in Darfur, and what are the dangers? What role should be played by the United Nations, and why has there not been more large-scale action to save Darfur, if there is genocide taking place and the United Nations has a "responsibility to protect?" Hosted by America Abroad's Ray Suarez, this special town hall event will provide members of the public with the opportunity to engage these questions and discuss the most pressing humanitarian crisis facing the world today.
